THE DMMM CONGREGATION

Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Gogo Nwedo, CSSp

The congregation of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy (DMMM) was founded in 1961 by Most Rev. Anthony Gogo Nwedo, C.S.SP.

Bishop Anthony Gogo Nwedo CSSP was ordained the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Umuahia on May 17, 1959.The area was undeveloped, with very few primary schools and fewer secondary schools.The area was also predominantly Protestant. He was tasked with leading and developing the new diocese, and he needed help. First, he noted that Bishop Shanahan had experienced a similar situation in Onitsha, which he successfully managed by building Catholic schools as tools of evangelization and development. So he borrowed the idea and began building schools, colleges, hospitals, and orphanages.

But the question was: who would run this institution for him in the spirit of evangelisation?

In order to address these questions, he tried to invite a religious Congregation to come to the newly created diocese to help, unfortunately none was available at that time. Therefore, he received on request the so called „Norma“ for erecting a Congregation from the Secretary General of Propaganda Fide.

The DMMM Congregation is an Institute of Apostolic Religious Life whose members take the three public vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity. The first profession of the first DMMM members took place on December 8, 1966. On Feb. 2, 1994, DMMM became a Congregation of pontifical Right.

Although it is an indigenous Congregation founded in Nigeria, DMMM has spread its missionary arms to all parts of the world including Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States of America.

DMMM CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION

The DMMM Superior General and the General Council are responsible for the spiritual and temporal affairs of the entire Congregation. The different Regions and their Councils represents the central administration in various regions and is responsible for the Sisters in their regions. The seat of the General Council is in Nigeria.

We have a total of six regions; Abuja Region, Europe Region, Ibadan region, Onitsha Region, Owerri Region, USA/Canada Region.

The current central administration was established in August 2021 after the 8th General Chapter of the Congregation. The following are the members of the General Council:

DMMM REGIONAL ADMINISTRATION - EUROPE REGION

The Europe Region was formed after the 6th General chapter in 2009 and is comprised of three councils: the German Council, the Italy Council and the UK/Ireland Counci. The central administration for DMMM Europe Region is presently in Rome while the councils are each overseen by the respective Regional Councilors with the Regional Superior as the Superior of entire Europe Region.

Sr. M Remigius Onuoha was elected into the office on the 23rd of November 2024 as the 5th Regional Superior together with three councilors.

The DMMM Europe Region has grown from strength to strength since it was created after the 6th DMMM General Chapter in 2009. Under the protection of Mary Mother of Mercy, three Regional Superiors and their Councilors have served and piloted the affairs of the Region for the past fifteen years before the election of the current Regional Superior and Councilors in 2024.

The Region consists of seven countries that are grouped into three Councils. Germany, Austria, Sweden and Belgium belong to the German Council. The United Kingdom/Ireland Council is made up of England and Ireland and the Italian Council is made up of Italy.

GERMAN COUNCIL

There are four countries that made up the German Council, namely Germany, Austria, Belgium and Sweden.

ITALY COUNCIL

There are currently 8 communities that made up Italy Council.

UK/IRELAND COUNCIL

There are currently 9 communities that made up the DMMM UK/Ireland Council.
