The Brief History of DMMM Italy Council

The coming of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Sisters in Italy was made possible through the instrumentality of the  beloved nieces of our father founder  Anthony Gogo Nwedo: namely Kate and Irene Osadebe, popularly known to us as Umuejima. Umuejima has a friend called paulo Canucchi, a Sindaco of Montefiascone (VT). The Sindaco was looking for sisters to work in the old people’s home (Ex ONPI), and  Umuejima told him that their uncle is a Bishop and have sisters who can do the job and the Sindaco accepted the idea.

Then Umuejima made all the necessary proper arrangements; the contract, the invitation letters from the Comune of Montefiascone, a letter from the Diocesan Bishop and travelling tickets. They sent all the required documents to our Father Founder, who handed everything over to the then Superior general in the person of Mother Mary Paul Offiah of blessed memory.

Mother Mary Paul Offiah chose five sisters who left for Italy on the 5th  May and arrived Italy Fiumicino Airport on the following day which is 6th of May 1987. The sisters were assigned to be taking care of the aged at the old Peoples' home in Montefiascone. The house is called organization of National Pension Italy (Ex ONPI).  It was a big house with over 200 old people. At their arrive in Monntefiascone, the Sindaco Paulo Canucchi and his councilors where there to welcome them, after which the Sindaco  brought  somebody who helped in teaching them Italian language.

Through the help of our sisters, especially Sr. Noela Igbokwe, other DMMM Communities were erected, such as Serminary Anagnina, Catania, Stiliagno, Pavia, lubrich, and Catacombo. We thank the Almighty God for making it possible through the letters Sr. Noela requested from all the Dioceses in Italy where the Daughters were working then, which assisted in granting our Congregation the Pontifical right.

To God be the glory.
