The Brief History of DMMM UK/Ireland Council
The first group of three DMMM Sisters came to United Kingdom on the 7TH of October 1987, escorted by Rev Sister Mary Chijoke Ibe the Vicar General of the DMMM at the time. The Primary intention of their arriving in England was to undertake the Missionary work in the Diocese of Shrewsbury especially in Wythensshawe Area in Manchester. Two of the Sisters were assigned as Nurses to work in Health parastatals with the Diocese and one sister was assigned to work with the Children’s Rescue in Manchester including in the Prison as a social worker.
The DMMM Sisters came at the invitation of Bishop Grey. It was a negotiation and contract formulated between Bishop Grey and Rev Mother Mary Paul Offiah of Blessed Memory. The Daughters lived with the sisters of the Charity of Evron for nearly a year before they then moved to Parish Centre Altrincham. In 1989, they moved to London in Westminster Diocese and in 1990 to Brentwood Diocese. Since then DMMM Congregation UK/Ireland Council has grown from strength to strength. New sisters started coming to UK for studies and working till currently. Now we have 8 DMMM Communities in various Dioceses in UK.
In conjunction with DMMM set- up in Ireland, The first group of DMMM Sisters went to Ireland in the 1980’s sent by the Congregation for studies. Later in 1990’s four Sisters were sent by the Congregation as well to study Nursing in the school of Nursing and Midwifery owned by the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) Congregation. Currently, two Sisters are still on mission in Ireland and three new sisters just arrived this year for pastoral apostolates. To God be the Glory.
The DMMM Congregation in UK/Ireland has grown from strength to strength; thereby continue to witnessing in Unity within the Contemporary society.
